What is the Difference Between Broadband and a Leased Line?

broadband

When it comes to sourcing internet for either your business or personal use, most people tend to go with the option that provides them with the best deal. For example, the best internet connection and speed for the best price. But did you know that different types of internet connections can serve different purposes, and some may be more suited to your needs than others?

Nowadays there are a number of different types of internet connections available across the United Kingdom, from a cable modem to wireless internet. Each type of internet connection provides users with different packages and deals, but the two most popular types are broadband and a leased line. Although many people believe that these two internet connections are the same, there are a number of differences between the two. Let’s take a closer look at the differences between broadband and a leased line.

What is broadband?

Although most people have a broadband connection in either their home or workplace, very few people know exactly what it is. Broadband is a form of fixed line internet connectivity, that is made up of either copper or fibre optic cables that connect your home or business premises to a telephone exchange. When you use a broadband connection, it delivers data to and from your home or business, thus connecting you to the internet.

What is a leased line?

A leased line is the fastest form of fixed line connectivity and can offer users quick download and upload speeds. To form an internet connection, leased lines use a dedicated fibre connection from your premises directly to the telephone exchange. Leases lines are a great option as you do not share the internet connection with any other premises, unlike broadband.

What are the differences between broadband and a leased line?

Speed

The main difference between broadband and leased lines is speed. With traditional broadband your premises shares the internet connection with those around you. Whereas, with a leased line you have a dedicated connection that delivers an internet connection directly to your premises. This means that even a leased line with a lower speed of 10Mbps for example can offer a quicker and more reliable connection than a broadband connection with a speed of 50Mbps.

Cost

Seeing as a leased line offers users with a higher quality connection, it typically means that it is more expensive than a broadband connection. Broadband is one of the cheapest options for an internet connection, although it may not always offer value for money. For example, businesses or homes in rural areas may suffer from very slow broadband due to their distance from the cabinet. This means that although broadband is cheaper, it may not be as cost effective as a leased line.

Flexibility

Another difference between a leased line and broadband is flexible. As previously mentioned, broadband uses a shared connection meaning it cannot be adjusted once it is installed. Whereas a leased line can be increased or decreased depending on your required usage, meaning it is more flexible. So, you are looking for more bandwidth or require a faster connection, you will be able to increase your connection speed with a leased line.
